There are a lot of good vets out there for your rat, but it is not always the easiest task to find them.
Some veterinarians can wonderfully with cats and dogs, but do not have the same knowledge of rats. Some veterinarians do not rat and think it easier to die and buy a new one. Some may overcharge because they do not want to treat your rat.
But there are some who respect and rats have knowledge about them. There are other, respect and rats are open to advice. They are the ones to pursue.
You should try and find a good rat veterinarian as soon as possible, so that if an emergency occurs, you know to call.
Never accept derogatory remarks about your rat.
Call your elected veterinary practice and are in advance. Ask if the vets have been there with a lot of rats. Maybe even talk to the vet and ask as many questions as you like. Ask them how many they treat rats and their success rate in the operation (it should not be less than 95%)
You can even ask a trick question, like "Should I withhold food before surgery". If they know about rats they know that they do not vomit, so you do not need to withhold food.
If your rat on the veterinarians they should be a towel for your pet, so that the cold table, not make them uncomfortable.
Learn more about your rat symptoms, so you can maximize the productivity of your trip to the vets.
And finally ... if you have a good spread the word and contact rat websites, so they let others know.
